The Roughing Gouge is the tool used initially when beginning to be a square piece to the round. It is a wide-fluted gouge and can remove quite large chips, therefore is not suitable for cutting end grain. This tool is unsafe for making bowls or any faceplate turning. The tool has a bevel and a cutting edge its main function is to remove waste from a square piece in order to make a rough cylinder.
