A good way of achieving a smooth finish on a spindle is by sanding it while still on the lathe. Although a good finish can be achieved by using the Skew Chisel it often the case that some sanding will also be required. The process of sanding on the lathe is quite straight forward. The tool rest is removed altogether for safety and a piece of ordinary sandpaper is held against the piece and the machine turned on. The speed of the lathe is slowed down when sanding, otherwise too much heat could be generated and it could burn the piece. It is also important to hold the sandpaper on the underside of the piece so the dust is carried away. The sandpaper should be moving at all times to reduce heat build up.
