The Spindle Gouge is the tool that is normally used to add detail to a spindle. It is a shallow fluted gouge and in terms of appearance it looks like a smaller version of a Roughing Gouge. However in reality the Spindle Gouge is quite different as it is used when adding fine detail to spindles whereas the Roughing Gouge is plainly for bringing a square piece to the round. The Spindle Gouge can be used to shape beads and coves on spindles. The tool is mainly used for spindle turning but is also suitable for some faceplate work.
